Replacing a burnt-out headlight bulb is never an exciting chore. To add to the frustration, the amount of mechanical and electronic gizmos under your 2005 Honda Civic's hood creates a cramped working environment and makes the chore increasingly difficult. While the process to remove and replace the bulbs is fairly simple, set aside extra time to allow for the difficulty you will experience trying to get the old bulb out and the new bulb in.

[edit] Change Headlight Bulb

  • Determine which headlight bulb is faulty. Turn the ignition switch and headlights on. Stand in front of the car and have your assistant cycle between the high and low beams. Turn off the headlights and ignition switch.
  • Open the car's hood and locate the affected headlight assembly on the inside of the engine compartment. Reach into the compartment and grasp the back of the bulb and its wiring harness. Twist the bulb counter-clockwise to unlock the bulb from the headlight assembly. Pull the bulb out of the headlight assembly.
  • Press down on the base of the wiring harness' connector to release the bulb. Pull the bulb out from the connector and discard it.
  • Plug a new headlight bulb into the wiring harness' connector, pressing the bulb's prongs in until the connector's locking arm snaps into place. Insert the bulb into the headlight assembly. Twist the bulb clockwise to lock it into place.
  • Repeat as necessary to replace any other damaged bulbs.

[edit] Tips & Warnings

  • The 2005 Honda Civic requires two separate bulbs in each headlight assembly. The high beam and low beam uses 9005 and 9006 halogen bulbs, respectively.
  • Don't touch the glass bulb of a halogen headlight with bare fingers. Skin oils can damage the sensitive bulb permanently.
