1996 Geo Prizm LZI Change the Alternator Belt
The Geo Prizm shared the same platform as the Toyota Corolla in the 1990s. These cars came with a 4-cylidner engine that used a V-belt system to drive the engine accessories, with individual belts running each component. If the alternator belt goes out, the charging system will cease to function and you'll eventually break down. Fortunately, changing the belt on your 1996 Geo Prizm LZI can be done in under 10 minutes.

 Change the Alternator Belt
- Pop the hood and locate the alternator. It's on the driver's side of the engine, towards the top. There are two bolts holding the alternator in place. Loosen both of them with an open-end wrench.
- Push the alternator towards the center of the engine to remove all tension on the belt. Then pull the belt off of the alternator and the central pulley and discard it.
- Set the replacement belt onto the central pulley, then loop it around the alternator. Push the alternator away from the engine and tighten the alternator bolts with an open-end wrench.
- Push down on the middle of the belt and see how far you're able to push it down. If you can push it more than 1/4-inch, then push the alternator back further to add more tension to the line.
